Most people have used hair dye at one point or another in their life to change the tone, add highlights, or to change the entire look of their hair color altogether. But only a fraction of these people have ever used green hair color to drastically change their appearance that demands attention. This could be for many reasons, first off the top of the head is that it’s of course not natural for anyone to have green hair! Most people choose to use hair dye in order to make it appear like a different hair color, like going from blonde to brown, or black to a lighter shade of brown. These are regular colors and while you may be able to tell they are using hair dye upon close inspection, for the most part it goes unnoticed and people will dismiss it as your true color. On the other hand if you have just purchased green hair color and applied it to your head, you won’t be able to take two steps without people specifically noticing you.
For some people, getting noticed for green hair every step they take isn’t a bad thing, and in fact is exactly what they’re looking for. Let’s face it, some people love getting attention and will do whatever it takes to get it! This doesn’t mean that people who use green hair color are attention seekers who are desperate and were deprived of attention as a child; some people turn their hair green simply because they want something new, or because they enjoy wearing outrageous things simply because it makes them happy. Whatever the reason for doing it, using green hair color on yourself is going to be a fun experience and you’ll probably find that simply going to places like the grocery store with green hair open up the door for all kinds of experiences that you never had before. You’ll find that people start conversations with you more based on your hair. You’ll probably get asked, “what’s the green hair for?” or be told “nice hair” frequently which opens up the door to start a conversation with the person.
On the other hand there will always be people who will stereotype others by their appearance. When they see someone who has green hair they may immediately think misfit, or someone who isn’t nice or is starting trouble or is in to psychedelic drugs. You may begin to see people give you dirty looks, or actually avoid being around you altogether. This is bitter sweet, because it allows you to see a side of the world that you would have never experienced before. It allows you to feel a bias that you may not have known existed and reveals the shallow thinking of many people all around us every day. At its most basic level, green hair color is simply a way to change your hair color, but on a deeper level it can actually be a great and eye opening experience that you’ll learn a lot from.

The short answer to this question is yes, but this question deserves more than just a one word answer as there are a lot of things to consider when using green hair color on black or very dark hair. The first tool you’re going to need in order to make this happen is dedication. Are you willing to go through the effort it’s going to take to keep your hair green? Because black hair is so dark, it will be very difficult to get it to a green color directly simply because the black would override the green. What this means is you can’t apply green hair color directly to your black hair and expect for it to be a good green hair color once you’ve completed. If you had very blonde hair you could do this, so with that information what it means is that in order to make your black hair a good quality green color you will first need to bleach your hair to blonde. For this reason many people who have black hair stay away from going to a green color because it’s so hard on their hair. Not only will you be bleaching which isn’t good for your hair, but then you will be applying more chemicals to your hair to apply the green color. At the end of the process if you don’t do it correctly you’ll have hair that looks very damaged and worn out and you may regret ever doing it.
The good news is if you have the dedication and the time, you can use green hair color to color your black hair green and still have it end up looking good. One of the keys to this is buying high quality coloring products that reduce the amount of harmful chemicals you’ll be putting in your hair. A popular product called “Sun In” is a spray bottle that bleaches your hair by spraying bleach type chemicals directly on it. While this will help turn your black hair blonde before using the green hair color, it’s also not healthy for your hair and isn’t recommended. A good high quality example of bleach for your hair is L’Oreal Platinum. You can find this in almost any store that sells hair dyeing products and can expect this to be of higher price than most other products. This is because the ingredients used in the development promote healthy hair and will cause much less damage to your hair once complete. It’s well worth the money if you want your hair to look nice, which is a given since you’re looking to dye it green!
Keep in mind that regardless of how high of quality the product you use in your hair is, you will be damaging your hair. It should also be noted that bleaching black hair is permanent, so don’t expect the color to simply fade out of your hair with time; you will need to actually grow it back out in order for the bleach to be gone. Once you bleach your hair a nice blonde color (be sure to follow the directions for your specific brand, every bleach is a little different!) you can then begin to look for green hair color. Once again, go for high quality products. A good green hair color product can be found at Hot Topic. Special Effects is also a good quality green hair color that won’t completely destroy your hair. There are less expensive ways to go, like creating your own, or sitting in the pool too long…but it’s not recommended! It’s also a good idea to wait a couple of days before using green hair color on freshly bleached hair. It can be very hard on your scalp and hair and you should give it time to repair by using warm water and really good shampoos and conditioners.
If you have dark hair and are looking to use green hair color on it, take your time and buy high end quality products and understand that this is permanent! While the green hair color may fade, once it’s gone you’ll be bleach blonde again until your black hair grows all the way back out. Have fun!

If you’ve been paying attention you may recall that some of the best movie characters and most memorable of all time had green hair! Green hair is great for movie characters whether they are a hero or a villain simply because it’s a neutral color (where as black can be seen as evil and white as good) and because it really stands out and is eye catching. One of the most popular movies of all time, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory had showed the infamous Oompa Loompa’s sporting green hair styles! The Oompa Loompa’s were thought of as neither good or evil (but probably good since they make candy!) workers who helped Willy Wonka create candy in his factory. This was one of the first examples of characters in a movie having green hair, but what other people have had green hair in movies?
One of the most famous villains of all time in comic books and movies alike had green hair. His name is none other than “The Joker” in the Batman series of movies. Although The Joker is an evil character in the movie, he is dressed up like a joker on the back of traditional playing cards who typically had green hair. Jokers, or “Jesters” as they were known in mid evil times were known to bring laughter and happiness to people, so in one way we can see the green hair being used as a symbol of good, but since The Joker isn’t, it can also be seen as evil. Once again we see the neutrality of the color green in hair.
Another Villain who had green hair in a very popular movie “X-Men” was Toad. He had a long tounge he could use for wreaking havoc to anyone he chose to, and similar to a frog his hair was colored green. Typically frogs are not seen as evil creatures but in the movie, Toad was definitely evil so we see again here an example of the neutrality of green hair color.
green hair color is used sparingly in movies as it typically can only be used in ones which are fantasy or fiction, but one thing’s for sure- if a movie character wears green hair you’re bound to remember them!

If there’s one time of year that you’re bound to see green hair color used the most it will be October 31, Halloween. This is a night where anything goes, no matter how crazy and people will get to great lengths to have a great costume. Just as with any time of the year people want to stand out, and when you are going to a party with every person dressed up in a costume you’ll need something that really turns peoples heads. Halloweeen costumes that need green hair color to be complete would of course be the movie characters mentioned in previous posts, The Joker, Oompah Loompah’s, Toad, but can also go well with any type of costume like a clown, goblin, demon, or just a punk rocker.
The interesting thing about Halloween is that people will actually do and wear a lot of things that they aren’t brave enough to do on regular days because of fear of social judgement. But on Halloween anything goes, and because green hair color will last even past the holiday, you can give an excuse as to why your hair is green. This makes Halloween a great time to dye your hair green and give it a try so instead of people pushing their stereotypes on you by thinking you’re a drug user, a punk, someone who’s crazy, they’ll just dismiss it as left overs from yoru Halloween costume. Then if people respond well and if you enjoy the hair color yourself then you can keep it going for the rest of the year (and already have your costume ready by next Halloween!).
The alternative to using green hair color to color your hair for Halloween would be of course to simply purchase a green colored wig. While it’s not the most comfortable thing to wear it’s not permanent and you can often make it look better than your own since wigs come extremely thick in texture. We’d all like to have thicker hair if even just for a night! But if you do decide to go the route of actually using green hair color it’s not a bad idea to go to a salon and have them do it for you. Most salons will not have green hair color in stock, so purchase yours before you go and they should be happy to do it for you. They will make no guarantees about what the color turns out to look like but they’ll take their time and do it correctly and you can minimize the damage done to your hair.

For some people, having green hair just isn’t enough – they really want to stand out. For these people neon hair dye is the answer. If someone walks in with neon green hair color it’s almost impossible to ignore them no matter how many people are in the room. Neon green hair color can actually look very sexy on women if they have soft features on their face and are fare complected. Because of the contrast between fare complected skin and neon green hair color it just makes a nice soft frame for the face. Neon green hair color is similar to green hair dye coloring in that if you have dark hair you will need to bleach it first. Although the neon is a lighter tint than dark green it can end up looking dark green if you directly use it on dark hair like blacks or dark browns.
A word of warning for those of you looking to use neon green hair color, you may not realize how difficult it will be to find outfits that look correctly with your hair. Neon green tends to clash with anything other than white or black so your outfits may be limited to these colors or you may just have to deal with looking a bit clownish; chances are if you’re wearing neon green hair color you won’t mind a bit. If you’re a girl who is thinking of taking on neon green hair color then you’re also going to want to rething your makeup. Red lipsticks and certain shades of blushes aren’t going to look correct with neon green hair and can easily make you look like a clown or a strange doll. Powder, eye-liner, will work fine with it but for your blush and lipstick it’s best to go with a shiny lip gloss, very light pinks, white undertoned lipstick, or if you’re looking for a totally exotic appearance you can go with lime green lipstick or a bright pink.
Having neon green hair color is a big investment of time and money. You will need to re-think your wardrobe, makeup, jewelry, and overall appearance in order to make it not look tacky. If you can pull this off as a girl or a guy you will turn more heads, meet more people, and have more attention than you have ever had in your life.
